His 90s work on Sleaze Castle is admired by the British comics cognoscenti, but his work has yet to break out. ‘We hope to help change that,’ says Russell Willis, publisher at Panel Nine. ‘VerityFair is a unique but superbly accessible tale that has the pull of a soap opera whilst mining issues of psychological depth, and stars a mostly irrepressible fortysomething actress-cum-fast food worker – possibly the most well-rounded female character in comics today.’ The iPad ‘deluxe digital graphic novel’ contains an 80-page VerityFair story, audio commentaries on nearly every page, production sketches, rare extra strips and illustrations, and an interview with the author.

Due out in March, it will be priced at just $4.99.

Developed by Panel Nine as a Newsstand app, users can subscribe and have issues automatically delivered each week to their iPad. The app includes our unique Contents page for navigation, multiple bookmarks, Panel Mode (for viewing the comic panel by panel), super-fast swiping, “floating” double-page spreads, landscape view for double-page spreads, additional content through our “Something Cool” button and the attention to detail and intuitive use that Panel Nine is known for. Compared side-by-side with digital comics from Comixology, iVerse or iBooks, the Panel Nine platform has more features, more skilfully implemented, and is the clear winner in terms of user experience.

Unlike some Newsstand apps, subscribing is super simple and if you subscribe before midnight on January 10th, you can get six months, 26 issues, for only £9.99 / $13.99. INSANE! After that, you can get a free 1-month trial when you subscribe at the normal price…

And let’s not forget the incredible strips: Daniel Hartwell and Neil Cameron’s “Pirates of Pangea”, James Turner’s “Star Cat”, James Smart’s “Bunny vs Monkey”, Adam Murphy’s “Corpse Talk”, Morag Lewis and Paul Duffield’s “Scaredy Cat” and Nick Abadzis’ “Cora’s Breakfast”. And there’s lots more!

The reaction to the app has been overwhelmingly positive and on its launch it went to No.1 in the Children’s Magazine section of Newsstand, beating out Doctor Who, CBeebies, Barbie and Pokemon!

James Turner’s Star Cat

I know we’re creating the app, but honestly, we’re hooked on reading The Phoenix each week! Go get your copy today!

Panel Nine presents astounding strips by Hunt Emerson, including his team-up with Alan Moore, a fabulous Freak Brothers episode, the frolics of Firkin the cat and much more…

Hunt Emerson is one of the zaniest comix artists in the world and the master of the underground British comix scene. The Certified Hunt Emerson is a showcase of Hunt’s most famous strips, presented in a deluxe iPad app for the very first time.

This app collects together over 200 pages of essential Emerson – 27 comic strips supplemented with a host of eccentric extras including madcap illustrations, galleries of cover art and self-portraits, and a brand new interview with the man himself.

This stunning app for the iPad includes the following special features:

• Audio commentary on selected pages, recorded by Hunt Emerson exclusively for this app

• Introductory notes to each comic strip written by the artist

• Beautiful high-quality digital images, with a specially-designed user interface that givesyou fast, smooth swiping from page to page and flawless pixel-per-second movement

• Panel Mode where you can double-tap on comics pages to view them panel by panel

• Visual contents and bookmarks that let you view thumbnails of all pages and navigate quickly and easily

Hunt Emerson is one of the godfathers of the underground comix industry, with his ‘Firkin the Cat’ and ‘Phenomenomix’ strips both running for over 30 years. He has collaborated with Alan Moore and produced graphic novel adaptations of classics such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Dante’s Inferno. His work has appeared in numerous publications and has been translated into a dozen languages.

Praise for Hunt Emerson:
“His mind works on a level untouched by most humans.” – The Comics Journal

“Britain’s greatest underground cartoonist.” – 1001 Comics You Must Read Before You Die

The magazine contains a roundup of digital comics news, features and reviews delivered via Apple’s Newsstand
service for the iPad.

INFINITY publisher Russell Willis commented “Digital delivery is a huge part of the future of comics and we’re launching INFINITY to cover these developments, debate the key issues such as user experience, platforms and pricing and provide a guide for people to the good stuff. Appropriately the magazine is specially designed for the
iPad, and contains audio, video and Panel Nine’s “Panel Mode” presentation of digital comics.”

INFINITY had a previous incarnation as a small press comics fanzine in the 80s, and now
publisher Russell Willis has swapped his photocopier for an iPad and relaunched INFINITY for
the digital age. The preview issue is out now, with the first issue available in September. The
magazine will initially be published bi-monthly from then on.
Users can download the preview issue (and all subsequent issues) for free from iTunes

Graphic novelist David Lloyd, creator of the iconic Guy Fawkes mask made famous by the Wachowski Brothers film and the Occupy movement, addresses corruption in the deluxe digital version of crime-noir thriller Kickback. The iPad version includes an exclusive interview, audio commentary, and production notes and images.

TOKYO March 28th, 2012 It’s the mask protesting about corruption and greed around the world, and its creator David Lloyd, the artist behind V for Vendetta, has just released an interactive graphic novel for the iPad addressing those very issues: “V for Vendetta was concerned with how a society becomes corrupt and how it frees itself from corruption. My new graphic novel, Kickback, resonates with this theme, but it is about how one man frees himself from the shackles of his own corruption.”

Kickback follows the story of Joe Canelli, a corrupt cop in a tough city, haunted by his dreams and confused by his past. When his partner is murdered and his colleagues betray him, Canelli must confront his past and question the direction of his life. “Kickback is a fast-paced thriller that explores themes of corruption, consciousness, society, and self-respect against a big-city backdrop,” says Lloyd.

The iPad app (which takes advantage of the new retina screen) presents Kickback in a stunning high-quality digital format, with a specially-designed user interface that gives the reader smooth swiping from page to page, flawless pixel-per-second movement, and effortless transition to Panel Mode to view enlarged panels one by one in beautiful detail. The app also includes an audio commentary by the artist, an exclusive interview, and production notes and sketches.

In relation to the decision to release the work in iPad format, Lloyd commented, “Intelligent graphic novels for adults have rarely been able to find the readership they deserve. With this iPad version of Kickback, we’re making something I’m very proud of available to millions of people who wouldn’t think of scanning the graphic novel section of a bookstore, or entering a comic shop. The format also allows us to add features that would either not be possible or be too expensive in a printed book. The whole thing looks fantastic and I’m very excited to see my work in this form.”

The artist worked with Tokyo-based digital publisher Panel Nine Publishing who specialize in fully-featured software for digital graphic novels. Publisher Russell Willis, a Brit, commented: “Not all digital comics are created equal. The ‘lean back’ nature of the iPad allows immersion into the material and we have created software which sweats the small stuff to exploit the features of the device and create the optimal reader experience. This is a world away from reading a dodgy PDF on a computer monitor. Kickback is the future of the graphic novel.”
